A garage can quickly become a dumping ground for all kinds of things - from tools and bicycles to sports equipment and seasonal decorations - it's easy for the space to become cluttered and disorganized. First off, we need to talk about WHEN to organize you garage. The best time is during the spring or fall. These seasons are ideal because they're not too hot or cold, making it more comfortable to work in the space. These times of year typically coincide with cleaning and decluttering also, so it's a perfect opportunity to tackle the garage.
Now on to the HOW! Edit, purge, donate. Whatever it is you want to call it - this is the first step. It's time to declutter and sort out what you no longer need. This includes what you've outgrown, whats broken, the things you didn't even know you owned because they've been hiding in a box for 2 years. Be honest with yourself about what you need and what you don't. If you haven't used something in a year or more, it's probably safe to get rid of it. If you've been saying you're gonna sell it for 6 months, you're probably never going to get around to actually selling it. Once you have decluttered and sorted everything, it's time to assess your storage needs. Think about how you want to use your garage space and what items you want to keep in there. Do you need shelves, cabinets, or pegboards for tools? Would a bike rack or sports equipment organizer be useful? Make a list of the storage solutions you need. After assessing your storage needs, it's time to install the storage solutions. This could include shelves, cabinets, pegboards, hooks, or other storage systems. Consider using vertical space to maximize your storage options. Place your items that are in the same family together. Tools belong together. Decorations belong together. Your beach equipment should live together. It makes it so that everyone can find everything without any guesses. This is also a way to hold yourself accountable. If all your halloween decorations are together, and you realize you've got 7 tubs, you might be able to realize you can donate or stop buying. Knowledge is power. Next step, it's essential to label everything. Labeling makes it easy to find things and keeps everything organized. It holds people accountable on where to return items to. The last step is to enjoy your new space!
